Letter #58: The Glory (Part 2)

Good morning, Erin.  All right, no time to waste—let’s get second-halfical on this! Which is definitely about enthusiasm for my commentary and not at all me trying to cover for yet again not having a worthwhile preamble planned! 1. Not gonna bury the lede, here: I was disappointed with the second half. I thought it was a bit of a mess, and I think it would take way too long to explain exactly why—so suffice to say that I thought, after the bevy of loose threads in Part 1, they didn’t follow up on many of the dramatic seeds they’d planted. In fact, I thought they dropped or ignored a lot of the loose threads only to then replace them with all new loose threads in Part 2.  1A. Slightly more specifically, I’d say the second half rushed to get to its ending, which sort of makes the slow (but not unsatisfying) pacing of the first half seem that much worse, since we could have spent less time dawdling with things that didn’t ultimately serve the story ( cough Dr. Go’s revenge cough ...

Letter #57: Welcome to Waikiki 2

Good morning, Erin.   I’ve recently been very into a song called “Good Boy Gone Bad” by a group you’ve probably never heard of (but I think you’d probably really like) called TXT. So, of course you would then recommend I turn my attention to something with a hefty amount of Good Boy in it.   Which is exactly what I did—and how could I not? Good Boy + you telling me what to do + a string of mostly disappointing Korean movies (which just you wait for when I drop that monster letter on you) that left me desperate for some kind of treat for myself? Of course I was going to watch it.   So, settle in, my K-drama seonbae , so we can discuss (briefly? I don’t actually have tons of notes on this one—but when has that ever meant anything, right?) Welcome to Waikiki 2 .   1. The show starts off with an obvious homage to both Kill Bill and (unless I’m just reading into it) Suckerpunch , so it only took a couple of seconds to reestablish that I really need to leave all of my ...

Letter #56: The Glory (Part 1)

Good morning, Erin. Here’s a little “inside baseball” for you: as rambling and unnecessary as the opening paragraphs to my letters always seem to be, I actually have them sort of (I stress sort of ) sketched out well in advance of sitting down to write them. They are, in fact, usually some of the first things I jot down in my notes for each show, often being what I’m thinking as I head into the first episode or what my experience around watching the show has been. I don’t always stick to it, but it’s rare for me to toss it aside completely.  For The Glory , though, I…don’t have anything. For the first time, I have absolutely no notes to guide my idiosyncratic (and, I’d like to think, in its own way charming ) habit of spending a bit too much time in a preamble to the reason we’re here.  Imagine my terror. …but it’s fine, of course, because I then quickly settled on the lack of planned preamble as the topic for my preamble—such a clever boy am I.  Oh! I was probably going...
