Letter #99: Welcome to Samdal-ri (...with an asterisk)
Good morning, Erin. If you’ve read my Backstreet Rookie letter, I’m sure you’ll remember that, in discussing my reasons for starting Backstreet Rookie , I more or less tipped my hand about my opinion of Welcome to Samdal-ri —which is to say, I didn’t like it. Like, enough that I came thiiiiiis close to doing the unthinkable, Erin: dropping the show entirely. I know. Can you even imagine. But, in the end, I did not drop it—though I also can’t truly say I watched it. I mean, I did watch it. Just not all of it: from about Episode 13 onward, I very deliberately skipped over scenes about the main duo and only watched stuff with the supporting cast. (And we’ll get into it, don’t you worry.)
