Letter #17: Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo

Good afternoon, Erin.   Y’know, it’s kinda funny that, on my nightstand, I’ve got...well, I've got about 20 books, but one  of them is Volume 3 of Suzuka , the first manga series I ever read—because I was in love with the anime adaptation and wanted to jam it into my brain even when I couldn't watch the show (i.e. at work or during my commute). It was, as I have mentioned before, my go-to comfort series, which I watched on a loop for months and months, because I...well, suffice it to say I needed something like that, at the time. Which is a little sad, but not as sad as how, before this, I had purchased and was reading every morning before going to work  a children's novelization of episodes of Phil of the Future to settle my nerves.   Anyway, the point is Suzuka  was garbage, I loved it to death, and I’ve recently started re-reading it just to give it another look. And found it to be so much worse than I remembeed—but also just as special to me. Which I’m gla...

Letter #16: Touch Your Heart

Good afternoon, Erin.   Well, as I promised, because I had finished True Beauty , and because you had been out sick and, thus, unable to immediately guide me to where I should spend my time, I found myself once again seduced by the allure of old friends who caught my eye: Touch Your Heart has Sunny and Mr. Death from Goblin playing the romantic leads—how could I say no to that?   “But Daryl, you notoriously malfunctioning divining rod,” I hear you say, “why would you take that risk, knowing your track record, when I’ve given you a perfectly good list that you know you can follow?”   Well, Erin, I’ll tell you: very recent history would indicate that I’m cursed to only make the wrong choice, so, even if I were to assume your list was tantamount to your specific guidance (which it totally is), the universe would re-write itself to make what was once a perfectly entertaining show become a total flop that would not only ruin your recommendations batting average but al...

Letter #15: True Beauty

Good afternoon, Erin.   So…there are coincidences, and then there are coincidences so defiantly coincidental as to make me think I am, in fact, playing out a scene in someone else’s fiction. For example, that time my friend and I were (coincidentally) crushing on the same girl and went to the movies to distract ourselves from the smothering pangs of unrequited love—only for the girl to come bounding down the aisle of our exact movie theater to take a seat a couple of rows ahead of us. At a date and time that had been rescheduled because of world events that pushed the original release of the movie back a couple of weeks. And which ended with us meticulously timing our exit so as to avoid her spotting us, only to end up leaving from our side of the theater at the same time the girl was leaving her side, and, as such, meeting face to face in the hallway. Wherein she introduced us to her new boyfriend. Because of course .   Well, on a smaller scale, after briefly talking to you a...

Letter #14: Space Sweepers

Good afternoon, Erin.   I’ve done the most terrible thing, for which I’m sure you will never forgive me: I watched the movie Space Sweepers instead of finishing True Beauty .   I know. I know . But I couldn’t help it. Vincenzo and Hee-do? There wasn’t an option. I had to.   …er, that is, Netflix for—um, forced me to! With…brain-altering, uh, waves! Yes—they used waves to alter my brain and forced me to watch a lackluster sci-fi movie! This isn’t my fault! It’s a…a…a conspiracy! Yeah yeah yeah, a conspiracy! Like, they knew I loved Cowboy bebop , right, and then they spent a bajillion dollars to buy the rights to and film a Cowboy Bebop live-action TV series—just like we all dreamed would happen—and then they made it the worst possible thing they could, planting the desire in my head to consume a good live-action version of Cowboy Bebop and—again, by force!—slowly building that desire into desperation with small bursts of brain-altering waves they’d deploy every 2...
